In this chapter, you will learn how to install WordPress on a local computer.
1. Creating a Local Server:
WordPress isn’t a stand-alone application it requires server software in order to run. So to install WordPress on your local PC, you need to create a local server using PHP & MySQL database.
You need MAMP for LINUX and XAMPP or WAMP for windows system. I am using windows here so I am going to install XAMPP software. Go to www.apachefriends.org and download it.
Now Install XAMPP with Apache and MySql services in your C drive, C:/xampp. See details below-
After the installation, run Xampp Control panel and press on start Apache and MySql services as indicated in the image below.
Once started a green color will appears around apache and mysql services as below-
Now your Local server is ready for installation of WordPress.
2. Create a New Database:
Before you install WordPress, you need to create a new database. In your XAMPP Control Panel, click the Admin button in the MySQL section or alternatively, You can also go to your web browser and type “http://localhost/phpmyadmin” to open up the same page.
Click on “Databases” near the top-left, and you’ll be prompted to create a new database. Then you’ve to enter a name, say “mysite” and then click Create. A new database will create with name “mysite” at the left side of PhpMyAdmin Panel. You can enter any name you want, but I suggest, give a name which is related to your website name because you may have so many websites databases under phpmyadmin database section and will be difficult to remember it later. After that close the window.
3. Download WordPress
Go to wordpress.org and download the latest version of WordPress. In order to get WordPress working with XAMPP, you need to unzip WordPress in the right folder. Go to the XAMPP folder on your computer and open the “htdocs”’ folder( C:/XAMPP/htdocs) Create a folder here with any name you want, say “mysite” and copy all the files and folders under WordPress folder in “C:/XAMPP/htdocs/mysite”.
After unzipping all the files and folder under “mysite “ folder the directory should be like here below-
4. Creating “wp-config.php” file:
Go to “C:/XAMPP/htdocs/mysite” and find the “wp-config-sample.php” file and rename it as “wp-config.php”. Now open “ wp-config.php” with a notepad or text editor say “notepad++” and change following:-
- Replace“database_name_here” with the name of your database, which in my case is “mysite”
- Replace “username_here” with “root” and leave “password_here” blank
- Save the file and close it
After above changes, your wp-config.php file should look like this-
5. Now go to your web browser and type http://localhost/mysite/ and hit enter:
You should see the translation screen that appears WordPress installation process.
Once you’ve chosen your language, continue to the next screen and enter your username and password details. Click Install WordPress.
Your WordPress installation is now complete. Now click on login with your user id and password details.
